Solibri in Press
Empowering the I in BIM
Cadalyst, Heather Livingston
Solibri CEO Jonathan Widney shares his thoughts on the direction BIM is heading and how Solibri is finding its niche.
"JW: A lot of tools can do interference detection, but a lot of them are just comparing geometry to geometry. Solibri is based on rules, so once rules are established, you have also established constraints. Then, when you're checking models, you're actually checking for compliance with rules. When an issue is identified it tells you what rule has been violated and what the constraints were, so it's very intelligent and much more of an analytical than CAD tool."
To BIMfinity and Beyond!
"The point is that accuracy in, say, building-energy–performance simulation comes not from Digital Project or Vectorworks Architect, but from Green Building Studio's gbXML, IES's Virtual Environment, or Square One Research's Ecotect. Accuracy in owner requirements and code compliance comes not from Revit or ArchiCAD, but from Solibri Model Checker, Trelligence Affinity, or from CodeBook International."
"Nevertheless, owner-oriented BIM automation tools are emerging, such as Solibri's Model Checker (figure 3), which already is in use at the world's largest owner/operator of buildings, the U.S. General Services Administration."

Solibri: I have mentioned this product in Cadalyst previously, but because it is so important for BIM, I will mention it again: Think of Solibri Model Checker as a spell checker for virtual models. The program analyzes building models for integrity, quality and physical security. It checks for potential flaws and weaknesses in the design, highlights clashing components and determines whether the model complies with building codes and an organization's own best practices. You can set up rules to check just about anything in your BIM model. (It found overlapping walls in my Revit model plus checked for fire egress paths.) For anyone working with the GSA, this program is a must, as the GSA has purchased it.
